John H. Tarbell (1849-1929) was a photographer from Groton, Massachusetts, who lived and worked across the East Coast. He worked in Asheville, North Carolina from 1896 to 1901 and in New England from 1902 until his death in 1929. He also lived and had studios in New York City and Washington D.C.

The Tarbell photographs contain 55 black-and-white photographs depicting people and landscapes. The majority of the photographs are unidentified. Several photographs identify the depicted women and girls as Shakers making a rug and interacting with chickens. One photograph identifies the location of a house on Chestnut Street in Salem, Massachusetts. Unidentified photographs depict rural family life and nature scenes, as well as the exterior and interior of suburban buildings.
