Description
A photograph of the interior of the D.H. Gregory & Co. Store and the proprietor, Malcom Chase, in Princeton, Massachusetts, during the1950s. D.H. Gregory & Co. Store was established in the 1840s when the town's population was around 1,400. Originally, goods for the store were pulled by a team of 6 horses from Boston through Worcester. Straw hats, made by local women in their homes, were sent back as return goods. In the 1860's Princeton became a popular summer resort town and the store flourished. Over the years, the D.H. Gregory Store housed more than just merchandise, and had a dining room and kitchen, and a mail and telephone office. The store finally closed in the 1970's.
