Description

Edith Belle Roper (b. 1880-09-22) was the daughter of William Marshall Roper and Mary Abbie (Davis) Roper (m. 1869-11-18). William operated a sawmill that primarily produced chair stock with his father, brother, and later his two sons. The mill was located in 'Slab City', on West Wachusett Brook near the intersection of Hubbardston Road in West Princeton. William Roper served as Selectman in Princeton from 1911-1915. When his sons joined the business, it became Roper Lumber & Box Co. They also threshed grain and had a gristmill. The family owned 11 tenements and controlled 1600 acres of timberland in Princeton, Rutland and Hubbardston by 1915. The house where William Roper and his family lived at the end of Old Pine Hill Road was torn down in the 1960s.
