History (approximately 1600s to 1897) of the Newton Fire Department covering the first fire prevention rules in the 1630s, the appointment of the first fireward in 1818, the organization of early fire fighting stations, the first electric fire alarm telegraph system in 1873, the Firemen’s Relief Association, intramural contests and Veteran Firemen’s Association. Lists names and dates of service of firewards and engineers by village, lists specific fires arranged by date from 1709 to 1895 (some handwritten notations to augment the list). Photographs of some chief engineers and officers, and companies of firemen. Includes business advertisements. -
