48 leaves ; 29 cm. - The diary of Edward Jackson who, in 1849, traveled from Newton, Massachusetts to Sacramento in search of gold. - At age 22 Edward Jackson (son of prominent Newton businessman, William Jackson) traveled to California in a disorganized fashion by steamboat and with several wagon trains. In his journal he comments on the landscape, the camping experiences, condition of the trail, his fellow travelers and misadventures with his mule. The journal ends at Sacramento when he headed for the gold mines. He stayed about a year there and returned to live in Thompson (or Thompsonville), Connecticut. His sister, Marian Jackson Gilbert of West Newton, transcribed his journal in 1855. -
