Slide #118 - Portrait of Claflin in suit, tie and with beard - William Claflin (1818-1905) was an industrialist and philanthropist who founded the Free Soil Party, was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives 1849-1853, then served on the Massachusetts Senate as president. He was Lieutenant Governor under Alexander Hamilton Bullock 1866-1869, was governor of Massachusetts 1869-1872, served on the National Committee of the Republican Party, and was a member of the U. S.
