Workers of the Isaac Prouty & Co. shoe and boot manufacturing company in Spencer, Massachusetts, pose for a picture while one man runs a machine to trim and buff the edges of the soles of boots. Note the young workers in the background. Children were employed on a regular basis, often in dangerous situations. It was the practice in the boot trade to pay employees every three, six or even twelve months. The second man from the left is David N. Beaudin.
