Description

Buckland Center School, District No. 1 in Buckland, Mass.,was built after the Old Brick Schoolhouse was torn down in 1850 or 1860. The Buckland Center School, a two-story wooden structure, was built on approximately the same site as the brick school.

Until 1888, the upper room of this school was known as Band Hall and was used solely for that purpose. When the school needed more room, the band, which historical resources don't identify by name, moved to the Methodist Meeting House and the whole building was used for school purposes. This suggests that the photo may have been taken sometime shortly after 1888, around the time the building was used only for education. Notice that the photograph shows twenty-three persons of various sizes assumed to be students and teacher(s). The numbers could indicate a need for two classrooms.

At the time of this writing in March 2010, this building looks pretty much as it does in this photograph. The Buckland Center School now serves as the home of the Buckland Historical Society Museum.
