Description
Charles E. Monroe shown in formal outdoor attire with his optometry traveling suitcase in hand. In the view, Dr. Monroe is wearing a full length wool top coat with velvet collar, a bowler derby hat, leather gloves, shirt, tie and dress pants. According to the notes on the back of the picture by his son: Dr. Ralph A. Monroe; the optometrist 'visited for one day in Stafford Springs, CT and two other towns each week professionally.' His first optometry office was in the Barnes Block on the corner of Main and Chapin Streets, in Southbridge from approximately 1885-1905, thereafter he had offices at 1456 Main St., from 1905 to approximately 1931. Monroe received his degree from the Chicago Ophthalmic College.
