Subject

Tool and die industry--Employees--Massachusetts--Williamsburg; Clothing & dress--United States--1900-1910; Williamsburg Manufacturing Company

Description

Eleven workmen pose in front of the Williamsburg Manufacturing Company building at the intersection of Williams Street and Buttonshop Road, Williamsburg, circa 1900-1910. Trim details visible on the building suggest that it is the 19th-century building on the site which burned in 1907, rather than the substantially similar one that replaced it and itself burned in 1993, but this is not certain. The company manufactured carpentry tools and hardware and was one in a long succession of milling and manufacturing enterprises on this site from 1806 to the present (2011). All these men's identities are unknown, and viewers are requested to contact the Society with any information about them. Their work clothes and headgear are strikingly varied. The image is mounted on light cardboard and measures 18.5 cm x 22.5 cm. It is captioned in pencil on the back in a modern hand (clearly not contemporaneous with the picture, but of unknown date) 'Williamsburg Tool Factory.'
