Dublin Core
Title
Fred Carr carte-de-visite, c. 1882
Subject
Williamsburg (Mass.); Carr, Fred N., 1869-?
Description
Full-length studio portrait of Fred Carr, at the apparent age of about 13. He is wearing an unusual lace-up shirt or tunic, apparently has a pocket watch on a fob in his breast pocket, and on his right breast he has pinned a medal and ribbon of some kind, the details of which are impossible to make out. He is posed with an enormous bicycle onto which it's hard to imagine that he could climb. Fred was born in Williamsburg, Mass., grew up and got a job on the railroad (the Williamsburg depot was a stone's throw from his home) and married a local girl in 1890. His young wife died just eight years later, and Fred seems to have left town for good soon afterward. The card measures 2.5 x 3.9 inches and its bottom edge has been cut off, though all of the photograph itself is still present. Illegible traces of a handwritten notation are seen at the cut edge. On the back of the card is printed 'A. J. Schillare Photography Studio'.
