Haydenville after Mill River Disaster, 1874

Dublin Core

Title

Haydenville after Mill River Disaster, 1874

Subject

Williamsburg (Mass.); Haydenville (Mass.); Disasters--Massachusetts--Williamsburg

Description

This large (13.5 x 10.25 inches) and wonderfully detailed photograph was taken from an embankment above the raised railroad grade at the southeast end of Haydenville, one of the villages in Williamsburg, Mass. The view is northwestward (upstream) through the center of the devastated village after the May 16, 1874 Mill River Disaster. Large buildings lie strewn about like toys, and many others that would have been part of this scene before the flood have disappeared entirely, swept down the river and reduced to splinters and rubble.
