Description

Half-plate, hand-colored daguerreotype in brass preserver of the artist Seth Eastman posing on top of Dighton Rock, a famous rock inscribed with petroglyphs outside of Taunton, Mass. The photograph is attributed to Horatio B. King and was probably taken on 7 July 1853. In the image, King highlighted the inscriptions on the rock with white chalk so they would appear more clearly in the photograph. Seth Eastman (1808-1875) was a draftsman, painter, and watercolorist who primarily focused on studies of frontier life and Native Americans. He was the principle illustrator for Henry Rowe Schoolcraft
