Phillips Academy -- Chinese Students

Description

Beginning in 1871 the Chinese government began sending groups of 30 students every year to the United States to train them in the Western ways, as part of what was titled the Chinese Educational Mission. The students remained until 1881 when they were all called home, as the political climate in China underwent a great change. The students were scattered to various schools and Phillips Academy was one of those selected schools. Yan Che Cheak unfortunatley died at an early age and did not leave behind any adult history. It was not uncommon for illness to strike a student and end his life.
