Description

Bronze statue of Nathaniel Bowditch (1773-1838), astronomer, mathematician and author of the American Practical Navigator, a seagoing guide still in use today, was erected on Central Avenue. The statue of Nathaniel Bowdwitch is sitting with symbols of his interests surrounding him: globe, sextant, book. This statue was cast in 1847 and was the first life-size bronze cast in United States; recast in Paris in 1886, artist: R. Ball Hughes.
