Description

Photos show views of the John Charles Doyle Elementary School located at 11 Paul Avenue on the west side of town near the Stoneham town line. The brick school was built to relieve overcrowding on the West Side resulting from the Baby Boom. On March 13, 1958 Town Meeting voted to authorize the Board of Selectmen to purchase or take the land by right of eminent domain for school purposes. The school opened to students in September 1961. No longer used as a public elementary school, in 2008 the Doyle is home to the independent, nonprofit Odyssey Day School, which leases the building from the Town of Wakefield. Photos taken July 26, 2008, at 12:30 p.m.
