Brick-and-limestone stepped, gabled Washington Square fire station was designed by G. Fred Crosby in 1898. Photograph shows fire apparatus with two firemen and three horses. One horse, Brownie, retired in 1906 at the age of 15, having served the fire department for 15 years.
