Scratched on plate above portrait: Patented Jan.23 1849. This is date of Whipple's patent for the crayon vignette, Patent No.6056. Plain oval mat; protector with rope motif. Red velvet pad embossed with large leaf. Brown pressed paper case stamped with mixed flower motif front and back. Two hook-and-eye latches. Attributed to John Adams Whipple, Boston. Purchased 1982. #1982.68 (no.2).
