Roberts Robert Jeffries Roberts was born in Boston, June 29, 1849. Roberts is attributed to have coined the phrase "body building" and did extensive work developing exercise using dumb bells. Beginning in August, 1875, Roberts started his career as instructor of physical education at the Boston YMCA and remained there for twelve years. In 1887 he served as physical instructor at the (School for Christian Workers, now Springfield College) Springfield campus, but resigned after two years. -- Information retrieved from the "sketch of Mr. Roberts' life" written by Luther Gulick found in the "Home Dumb Bell Drill" by Robert J. A pencilled caption in the verso of the photograph reads: "Ribt Jeffries Roberts Sp Boston Y Also Int YMCA College"; There is also a stamped caption that states: "Library Int'l YMCA College Springfield Mass.";
