Clint is staying in an "elephant iron house" now, which he describes as a corrugated metal structure with a roof of dirt and stones. It was built originally by the French, taken by the Germans, and now re-taken by the French and Americans. The landscape around them is the most desolate he's seen so far. He's back with his old friend that he mentioned before, who Clint had to fetch a cigarette for since he doesn't want to come out from under the covers of his bunk. News that Germany, Austria, and Turkey want peace has just reached them, but Clint has his doubts based on the suffering and destruction he has seen the Germans commit. He has been mostly healthy except for three days when he had the flu during their forced march to stop the German advance at Chateau Thierry.
