Une SOIRÉE D'ALLEGRESSE A CLICHY - Vive la liberté!
Title (alt.):
AN EVENING OF HAPPINESS IN CLICHY - Long live freedom!. Charivari
Description:
Two men are jumping about with happiness and shouting Long live liberty. In Clichy there was a prison for people who were not able to pay their debts. As we can see in this print, both men look rather happy. No wonder, since this prison for "commercial deliquents" was a rather comfortable one. It had its own café-restaurant, a gambling room, a tobacco shop, a bakery and a library. Needless to say that the stay in this prison was paid by the creditors.
