A la santé du raisin!... puisse-t-il ne pas être malade cette année!
Title (alt.):
Good health to the grape!... may it not catch a disease this year!
Description:
A very large part of the European wine harvest was spoiled in 1852 because of a disease caused by a parasite. No known remedy worked and French wine producers faced commercial ruin. The Government decided to take a step which especially in France no one wants to be reminded of nowadays. Healthy French grapevines were taken to the USA to be grafted on American grapevines which were resistant against the disease. The new plants, 50% American and 50% French, were then re-imported to France and proved to be unaffected by the parasite.
