Sketch of remarks of Hon. Daniel Davis, Solicitor General of the Commonwealth, on the subject of giving charter to Amherst College, before the Joint Committee, June 1, 1824
Description:
A broadside printed as an extra sheet by the American Statesman which includes the observations made by Daniel Davis on June 1, 1824 regarding the debate in the Legislature over the petition requesting charter for Amherst College. It provides background on the current state of the petition, the Collegiate Institution (Amherst College), the Charity Fund, a previous proposal for the removal of Williams College from Williamstown, Massachusetts, and controversy over potential negative effects to Williams College should charter be granted. Davis argues in favor of incorporating Amherst College.
Amherst College was conceived out of the previously existing Amherst Academy and was founded in 1821 as the Collegiate Institution. From 1821-1825 the College was known primarily as the Collegiate Institution or the Amherst Institution. In 1825 the institution was granted charter by the Massachusetts State Legislature and was thereafter known as Amherst College.
