- Mon ami..., lâche lui ta canne..... il pourrait t'entraîner dans la mer!......
Title (alt.):
- My dear..., let go of your cane..... it might drag you into the sea!....... Charivari
Description:
A man struggles with a lobster that has taken hold of the end of his cane; the man's wife urges him to let go of the cane, as she is afraid the lobster might drag her husband into the sea. Without any doubt, this print can be considered one of the most beautiful of this series. It shows the helplessness of the modern city dweller when confronted with the dangers of nature. Note the quiet sea in the background as a contrast to the vicious looking lobster, which manages to give quite a fright to the unsuspecting tourists from the capital. AUX BAINS DE MER. (At the seaside resort) is a series of 7 prints, which appeared in the Charivari in June 1858 and between August and September 1859.
