Spitzkopfe includes numerous detailed portrayals of marine creatures. Johann Conrad Susemihl designed and executed Spitzkopfe, which was printed as plate 44 of Lorenz Oken's naturalist anthology Allgemeine Naturgeschichte für alle Stände between 1839 and 1841. Textured hatch and stipple marks, combined with bursts of watercolor, heighten the tangible volume of each figure. Despite contributing to a garbled composition, the numerous anatomical studies within Spitzkopfe reveal Susemihl's and Oken's shared devotion to the pursuit of scientific accuracy.
