Title (alt.):
The Butcher. The effect of fire on the expression of the butcher determines either an extreme thinness or produces an excessive plumpness. As to his nature, the pork butcher is somewhat stationary, besides that he is a happy lad (as you can see) and rapidly makes his fortune.. Charivari
Description:
Caricature of a butcher. For this series, Daumier depicted various classes of Francais. On February 24, 1858 a new law ended a monopoly from which some 500 meat stalls and butcheries in Paris had benefited for many years, giving way to free enterprise. Even the scales, manipulated by the butchers in a rather creative way, were suddenly standardized under a governmental system of control. This change, effecting everyday life, motivated Daumier to create a series on the subject.
