Springfield College alumnus Dave L. Herrington (class of 1973) wrote this three-page document, which describes the creation of the Cherokee Track Club in 1974.

Herrington was a Springfield College graduate student in 1973, and as a graduate assistant he taught the women's skills and techniques course in track and field. At this time, Springfield College did not have a women's track team. However, the number of female students who were competing individually at various national Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) track meets was growing. With the encouragement of Vern Cox, the men's varsity coach, Herrington sought to start a team. The first practice was held on November 29, 1973. Despite difficulties with scheduling meets and fundraising, the Cherokee Track Club had a successful season and ultimately became the women's varsity team in 1977.
