Description:
Abd-el Kader was elected Commander of the Believers in 1832 and proclaimed the Holy War against France in 1839. He was defeated in the battle of Isly in 1844 and was interned in Toulon. Napoleon III freed him in 1853. The French were fascinated by foreign soldiers during this period.
