CRUSHED LAFAYETTE!... TRAPPED, OLD FELLOW!. Association Mensuelle
Description:
The print shows Lafayette’s funeral at the Paris cemetery Père-Lachaise. The impact of this print was intensified by its publication after the appearance of "Rue Transnonain". The romantic landscape in the background was drawn by Paul Huet. Daumier shows a King who pretends to mourn, while at the same time smiling deviously about the riddance of Lafayette. Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roche Gilbert Motier Lafayette (1757-1834) was a French officer, who also participated in the American Revolutionary War. He was one of the founders of the Charter for Human Rights, elected Deputy many times, and eventually became commander-in-chief of the National Guard. He helped Louis-Philippe ascend to the throne, a decision he later on deeply regretted.
