After graduation, Dudley began his long career serving in various YMCA positions and locations. From 1899 to 1901, he served as the railroad secretary at Dearborn Station in Chicago (1899-1901) and Brooklyn Heights in New York (1902-1903). From 1904 to 1905, Dudley served as the state secretary in Portland, Maine, and from 1906 to 1924, he served as secretary to the International Commission in Montreal, Quebec. From 1925 to his retirement in 1928, he worked as secretary to the National Council in New York. He died March 22, 1953. In June 1877, the International YMCA Committee began railroad work on a national basis. These facilities provided clean beds, good meals, and hot showers, as well as programs to address the educational, spiritual, and recreational needs of the workers. In 1920, the name of the Railroad Department changed to the Transportation Department, in order to "conform to the inclusive character of its work." Due to the consolidation of rail lines and the changes in railroad technology, the Transportation Department disbanded in 1989.
