Thomas J. Kenney wrote “Vern Cox and Women’s Tennis: Perfect Together” for the October 5, 1989 issue of The Student, Springfield College’s student newspaper. The article, which includes a picture of Coach Vern Cox, describes how he led the team to the Northeast-10 Championship title during each of his four years as coach. At the time of publication, the women’s tennis team was at an incredible 32-match winning streak. The article includes quotes from Cox describing the challenge of “[finding] the right balance for each match we play” and briefly describes his work history.

Vernon W. Cox graduated from Springfield College in 1944 and immediately joined the Army Air Corp, where he fought in the Pacific Theater. In 1947, he joined the Springfield College faculty as a physical education instructor, where he coached soccer, basketball, tennis, lacrosse, cross country and track and field. In 1977, Cox became the college’s alumni director. He passed away in 1991, after forty-four years of serving the college community.
