Title (alt.):
ACHILLES IN HIS TENT. Of Briseis in tears recalling her charms, The hero in his dreary pain. And Patroclus helps prepare his armor, Trying to revive their fiery value. Discreet translation of President.... This precious bas-relief has been discovered in the ruins of the antique red ball (Faubourg Monmartre) by our tireless traveller Mr. Charles Texier. According to Mr. Ingres, Phidias alone can be the author.
Description:
This lithograph shows a carved stone fragment of Achilles is resting under his tent. During the 1840's, a quarrel between painters of the classic and romantic schools had fully flared up. Delacroix asked the "loaded" question: "Who is going to liberate us from the old Greeks?" Daumier succeeded to answer it his own way by showing historic personalities such as Hercules, Pygmalion or Agamemnon in absurd situations.
