Title (alt.):
- Would you please come back down immediately....... I do not allow my tenants to receive visitors once I have cleaned my staircase!..... Charivari
Description:
A concierge tells a visitor to get off the stairs because he doesn't allow tenants to have visitors when he has just cleaned the stairs. MESSIEURS LES CONCIERGES (The Doormen) consists of only this one print, which appeared in the Charivari on January 19, 1858. The "concierge" (caretaker/doorman) of the house held a very special, powerful position in 19th century Paris. He distributed the mail, cashed in the rent and forwarded messages He was the mediator between landlord and tenant. RECONSTRUCTION OF PARIS. Due to the redesign of the Parisian avenues by HAUSSMANN many houses were demolished in favor of representative boulevards. This contributed to a serious shortage of apartments. Daumier is illustrating this problem in many caricatures at that time, especially in the series “Locataires et Propriétaires”.
