Charivari. General Omar walking towards the peerage.
Description:
The revolts in Lyon and Paris reached their peak in April 1834. Antoine-Maurice-Apollinaire, Comte D'Argout (1782-1858) and Baron Antoine Aymard (1773–1861) were sent in to calm the situation with military force. In this print General Aymard (here called Omar) is on his way to Paris, to become a Peer of France in recognition of his successful oppression of the revolts. The sable symbolizes the bloody fight of his troops and the torch insinuates that on his order a large part of Lyon was burned.
