Silhouette of Rev. Samuel Cooke, Menotomy, 1778. Made by taking the shadows from the light of the fireplace reflected on the wall. Done in black on rough beige paper. Another layer of beige paper was glued and or stitched on around the silhouette, but most of that on the left side has fallen off. Labeled in pencil in the upper right "Rev. Saml Cooke. Menotomy" In a dark wood frame. Framed is inscribed "Rev. Sam'l Cooke 1778" at bottom. Framed by Foster Bros, 4 Park St, Boston. Original paper back has completely fallen off and has been replaced with plastic. Note on back: COPY Original with Historical Society, Arlington Judge J.P. Parmenter The relic that Mr. Wilder has Explained to you is a genuine one. I got it with other papers of Miss Bradshaw, the grandaughter of Mr. Cooke, during a visit to her in her last Illness. It is of date 1778 and has been engraved for the history of Arlington. The history of Cutter family and Parker's book. There were portraits of all the other members of Mr. Cooke's family. It was called "A Shadow Picture" The shadows being taken from the walls, fireplace shedding the shadows. Respectfully, William R. Cutter.
