Lou North, a pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, stands on the pitcher's mound but behind the pitching rubber with the baseball located in his throwing hand. North faces forward looking at the catcher while standing behind the rubber.
In this image, North is in no position to throw the baseball, as he isn't standing on the rubber but is instead standing behind it. The rubber part of the mound is often used for footing and can help in terms of creating a more natural release for the pitcher. North therefore is in no position to throw the baseball in this image. He is most likely awaiting a signal from the catcher about what type of pitch to throw and then after receiving this signal, North would step on the rubber part of the mound and prepare to throw. This is supported by the fact North is gazing forward with his eyes intently locked on the catcher and batter that are located in front of him. It is also possible that North just wanted to relax for a second after his last pitch so he took the ball and stepped behind the mound to catch his breath. If North had just given up a big hit or had been pitching a lot, he might want these couple seconds to catch his breath before pitching again.

I used facial recognition to identify the player in slide 151 as Louis North.

This digital image is made from two separate digital scans; one scan of the lantern slide (reflective); one scan of the image (transparency); the two image were then combined in Photoshop to create the final image.
