Nixon is doing a couple of things wrong in this lantern slide that could be detrimental to his success. First off, Nixon did a good job at locating himself directly in front of the shortstop, but he needs to continue to watch the eyes of the pitcher and check on the location of the shortstop. Because Lavan is breaking back towards second base, Nixon needs to be aware that Lavan is doing this and should probably either return to second base or begin to steal third base because Lavan's decision to cover second base most likely means that the pitcher is going to throw the baseball to the shortstop at second base in an attempt to pick off the leading baserunner. Secondly, Nixon hasn't kept his body straight and is instead swaying side to side. This swaying motion makes the pitcher and shortstop more alert because the swaying makes it appear that Nixon is about to steal the base. Nixon should attempt to keep the attention level the pitcher and shortstop have towards him at a minimum, which will increase Nixon's likelihood for success.
Albert Richard Nixon was born April 11, 1886, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Nixon played for the Brooklyn Robins, Boston Braves, and Philadelphia Phillies over the course of his career. John Leonard "Doc" Lavan was born October 28, 1890, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Lavan played for the St. Louis Browns, Philadelphia Athletics, Washington Senators, and St. Louis Cardinals over the course of his career. One interesting fact is that both Nixon and Lavan finished their baseball career with only 7 home runs hit.
At the beginning of his fundamentals book, Mann lists all of the players that appear in his lantern slides. One player he lists is Al Nixon, whose image on the Baseball Reference site matches the person on this lantern slide. Mann also names Doc Lavan as a player, and the player in this image is a shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals, which is the position Lavan played. The two shortstops Mann included from the Cardinals were Specs Toporcer and Lavan, and Toporcer wore glasses and clearly isn't the player pictured, meaning that the player would be Lavan.

This digital image is made from two separate digital scans; one scan of the lantern slide (reflective); one scan of the image (transparency); the two images were then combined in Photoshop to create the final image. This digital image
