In this slide, the unidentified baserunner is sliding back into third base while completing the straight slide. The straight slide means that the baserunner is sliding directly into the middle of the bag. In the slide, Schultz is standing behind the base and has to reach his arms forward and downward to tag the baserunner, making it very difficult for Schultz to tag the runner. It is very difficult in general to pick a baserunner off of third base. Schultz is forced to stand behind the base in order to avoid getting spiked by the incoming baserunner, and he has to uncomfortably bend forward to tag the baserunner from behind the base. Both of these things give the advantage to the sliding baserunner returning to third base after leading off the base.
Joe Schultz was born June 24, 1893, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He played for seven of the eight times in the National League over the course of his career, with his longest stint being with the St. Louis Cardinals from 1919 to 1924. Schultz numbers are relatively average, making it appear that he was a solid role player who bounced around between multiple teams over the course of his career. There is very little information about the life of Schultz, and a lot of information about his more famous son who was also named Joe Schultz. He would also become a baseball player like his father, but would become a very successful coach in the Major Leagues after retiring.
It is impossible to determine for sure who the fielder is in slide 261, as Leslie Mann doesn't name the player in his manual titled the Fundamentals of Baseball. However, in all the other slides involving a third baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals, Joe Schultz is the one pictured. Because of this, the best guess as to who the player is Joe Schultz.
Good condition;
This digital image is made from two separate digital scans; one scan of the lantern slide (reflective); one scan of the image (transparecy); the two images were then combined in Photoshop to create the final image.
