Item Information
- Title:
- Leslie Mann Baseball Lantern Slide, No. 288
- Description:
-
At Sportsman Park in St. Louis Missouri, a pitcher stands on the pitcher's mound while the four infielders stand in various positions. The first baseman is standing very upward towards home plate as he is located in the grass, while the third baseman is also located upward towards home plate, but is standing almost on a level line with third base and still remains in the dirt. The shortstop stands directly next to second base on the left side of it while the second baseman stands behind the bases near the outfield, being positioned almost directly between first and second base.

This is the correct position for the infielders to stand in when there are baserunners on first and second base. The first baseman stands inward in front of first base because if the ball is hit to them, then they would immediately throw the baseball to third base because the first priority here is to make sure that no baserunner advances to third base. The third baseman stands almost directly to the side of third base because if they field the baseball, they would tag third base and then throw the baseball to either first or second base in an attempt to turn a double play. If the shortstop fields the baseball, then they would be able to throw the baseball to third base from their position as well. The second baseman acts as the back up for the first baseman because the first baseman stands very close in towards home plate. If there is going to be a play made on first base, the second baseman would be able to cover the base. This could occur if the first baseman fields the baseball and throws it to third base, and then the third baseman throws the baseball back to first base. A third baseman may have an easier time throwing the baseball to first base rather than second base which is why that might occur, so the second baseman would cover first base here. The second baseman is not in a position to throw the baseball to third base, but is in a position to turn a double play if the baseball is hit to him.
Good condition;
This digital image is made from two separate digital scans; one scan of the lantern slide (reflective); one scan of the image (transparecy); the two images were then combined in Photoshop to create the final image.
