At Sportsman Park in St. Louis Missouri, there are four baseball players standing in the infield while one player stands in foul territory to the right side of first base. One player stands directly next to second base while another player stands behind but in between first and second base near the outfield. The other two players stand in front of but close to first base.
In this slide, the first baseman has fielded a baseball hit to him and the pitcher has run over to first base to cover it. This allows the first baseman to focus on fielding the baseball rather than fielding and then running to first base, and the goal is that by the time the first baseman has fielded the baseball, the pitcher will have arrived to cover first base. The catcher is the player who stands in foul territory, as he is backing up first base in case of a wild throw. This is important because having a backup will limit the opportunities that the baserunner has to advance extra bases.
