This lantern slide shows the positions of multiple infielders at Sportsman Park in St. Louis, Missouri. There are players standing on first and third base while another player stands directly to the left of second base. There are two players standing in the infield, one in front of and on the left side of the pitcher's mound, and the other in front of and on the right side of the pitcher's mound.
This lantern slide demonstrates the correct way for the baseball players to stand after a batter has placed a bunt down and there are baserunners on first and second base. If there was no baserunner on second base, then the pitcher, first baseman, and third baseman would all run forward to field the baseball if the batter chose to bunt it. However, because there are runners on first and second base, the third baseman needs to cover third base because the priority is for the baserunner approaching third to be thrown out compared to the runners on first or second base. The second baseman moves to cover first base while the shortstop moves to cover second base, allowing all three bases to be covered while also allowing three players (the catcher, pitcher, and first baseman) to attempt to field the ball and throw it to one of the bases, ideally third. Here, the pitcher has fielded the baseball, and after fielding the baseball, he turns to third base and throws the ball there.

This digital image is made from two separate digital scans; one scan of the lantern slide (reflective); one scan of the image (transparency); the two images were then combined in Photoshop to create the final image.
