Melvin B. Rideout was born on May 15, 1871 in Illinois. Graduate of Springfield College, then the International YMCA Training School, Class of 1893, Rideout is credited with introducing basketball to England while serving as a French delegate at the YMCA Jubilee Convention in June 1984. He spent five years as the physical director of the Association in Paris, France, and the following three years as a field secretary doing special organizing work in Europe. From 1899 until 1905, he served at a YMCA in Washington, D.C. as a physical director. Rideout died on November 26, 1957.
