Le défenseur de Calas consolé de n'avoir pu défendre Bailly, André Chénier et Camille Desmoulins.
Title (alt.):
The defender of Calas consoled by not being able to defeat Bailly, André Chénier and Camille Desmoulins.. Charivari
Description:
Bailly, Chénier, and Desmoulins were executed on the guillotine in connection with a judicial murder. Voltaire was unable to defend them. Therefore we see him applauding the members of the Commune as they burn the guillotine. As of that date, the guillotine was abolished in France (except for use in times of war).
