Le petit Rentier. (Quincaillier retiré) Deux mille francs de rente: un chien, un chat, des serins et un jardin sur sa fenêtre.
Title (alt.):
The little Stockholder. (Retired ironmonger) Two thousand francs of yearly income: a dog, a cat, canaries and a garden on his windowsill.. Charivari
Description:
Old age pension systems did not yet exist in France. Thus the French public had to take care of their own old age financial security. The most common investments were Government Bonds of the French Republic or Foreign Bonds, which paid higher interest, with consequently more risk involved. On November 1, 1835, "Le Charivari" wrote an article together with this lithograph with the same title "Le petit rentier" describing the characteristics of this age group. At the end of the article, a little poem followed: "Au monde en sept cent trente il vint", Il en sortit en en sept cent quatre-vingt. Il vécut, il mourut: voila toute son histoire." (He was born in 1730, he died in 1780. He lived, he died. That's the whole story of his life.)
