Mr. Vautour. - Bon!... voilà encore une maison qu'on abat... je vais augmenter chacun de mes locataires de deux cents francs!
Title (alt.):
Charivari. Mr. Vautour. - Marvellous!... there's another house being demolished... I'll be able to increase the rent by another 200 francs!
Description:
During the period of the July Monarchy, the population of Paris increased dramatically. In the north of the city, new living quarters were constructed for the middle class, while the workers' districts in the east of the city deteriorated. Patience with landlords as well as with tenants was wearing thin and exorbitant rents became a common problem.
