Large sampler with detailed work and a series of imagery. Small stitches on fine ground - likely wool. Greens, pinks, blues, browns, and deep reds. Has significant damage in center of verse and has been tacked to another piece of linen to stabilize. Strawberry or flower motif and decorative lines around border, hearts, flowers, and trees on either side of verse. Verse: JESUS Permit thy gracious name to stand As the first effort of an infant hand (females?) And while her fingers on the sampler move Engage her tender heart to seek thy Love With thy dear Children may(?) her have part And write thy name thyself upon her heart This is a variation of a verse attributed by some to John Newton (1725 -- 1807), best known for the hymn "Amazing Grace". It is said that he wrote it for the sampler of his niece. It has also been suggested that it was composed by Isaac Watts (1674 -- 1748), also for his niece. Verse followed by simple flower motif, and then a series of images that are mirrored on other side. Flowers in vases and baskets, trees, deer, carnations, dogs (perhaps cats?), birds.
