Letter from Joseph Langland to Judith G. Wood Langland
Description:
Given chance to return to Bread Loaf on scholarship, but has declined since one of his brothers wishes to get away from the farm during the summer. Is writing continually, making little progress on poetry, but some on essays. Harvard, Yale, and Columbia are all retrenching on appointments for graduate assistants. War fever is heating Iowa: "The sense of conflict is so far removed from the middlewest that few people comprehend what a great war really means. I do not expect to be caught in the draft for about a year, but it is hard to know for sure." Spring vacation. Paddling on Iowa River.
