Has not actually been to the front lines, but almost drove through once unaware. Met five German soldiers in the street, unarmed, and had just given up and were waiting to be picked up and transported to a prisoner of war camp. Destruction of Germany: miles and miles. More displaced people in Germany than allied soldiers: "along the edges of the highways, picking out a shack or barn or shed to live in over night, gradually assembling in huge DP camps. They are a great number of Russians, plundering the countryside and all the German homes seeking revenge... I don't blame them at all..."
