The City Engineering Department was the construction agent for the Boston Water Board/Boston Water Works, and after they completed managing the construction, the operations were turned over to the BWB/BWW. Hopkinton Reservoir, Ashland/Hopkinton, was constructed 1890-1894; 1st known as Basin No. 5; changed to Basin No. 6, 1891 (and Sudbury Reservoir to be known as Basin No. 5).
