Lachnanthes tinctorum vividly displays redroot, a plant better known as Heritiera tinctorum in Redouté's time. Created between 1808 and 1811 for volume five of Les Liliacées, Lachnanthes tinctorum includes several views of its subject. The main depiction is spliced in two to retain the original scale of the plant. Redouté captures the fraying leaves of the plant with gradated amber hues alongside healthier green stems that exude vitality. Compositionally the print strives for truthfulness to nature, though Redouté's scale maximizes the striking effect of the flower. Lachnanthes tinctorum marries aesthetic attributes with botanical exactitude.
